Watching Empire Waist Made Me Reflect on My Body Positivity Journey

Sometimes a show comes along that feels less like entertainment and more like a mirror.

That’s exactly how I felt watching Empire Waist.

I’m only partway through the show, but I’ve already cried four or five times. Not because it’s just a story about fashion or design, but because it touches something so real for anyone who has ever struggled with body image, confidence, and self-worth.

There was one moment that hit me particularly hard.

The father tells his daughter:

“If you hate yourself now, you’re going to hate yourself later.”

That line felt like a knife.

Because I understood it immediately.

The Lie Diet Culture Told Me

For years, I believed something many of us were taught growing up: that losing weight would fix everything.

I thought if I could just get smaller, I would finally feel confident. I believed happiness, beauty, and worth were waiting for me on the other side of a diet.

But even when I lost weight, something didn’t change.

When I looked in the mirror, I still saw the same girl.

The same fat girl, just in a smaller frame.

The truth is that dieting didn’t heal the way I felt about myself. It didn’t teach me how to love my body. It didn’t change the voice in my head that told me I wasn’t enough.

Because the real work wasn’t about weight.

It was about self-love.

Learning to Love My Body as It Is

At some point on my journey, I realized something powerful:

You can’t hate yourself into becoming someone you love.

All the diets in the world couldn’t make me fall in love with the person I saw in the mirror. That had to come from something deeper.

I had to learn to love my body from head to toe.

From my curls

to my stomach

to my feet.

I had to unlearn years of messages about what bodies are “supposed” to look like and start appreciating the body I actually live in.

The body that carried me through life.

The body that created my son.

The body that allowed me to build my dreams and create My Beautiful Fluff, a brand and community built around body positivity, confidence, and self-love.

Why Representation Matters

Watching Empire Waist reminded me why representation and storytelling matter so much.

Because somewhere, someone watching that story might finally feel seen.

They might recognize the hurt that comes from being told they aren’t enough. They might start questioning the idea that they need to shrink themselves to deserve love, success, or recognition.

And maybe they’ll start the same journey so many of us are on.

The journey of realizing this truth:

Your worth has never been tied to your weight.

You don’t have to become a different version of yourself to be worthy.

You don’t have to shrink yourself to be beautiful.

You are already enough.

Exactly as you are.
