I Knew Something Was Wrong: How to Advocate for Yourself When Doctors Don’t Listen

by Brittany Washington 23 Mar 2026 0 comments

There’s a different kind of frustration that comes when you know something is wrong with your body… and no one is listening.

And today, I’m sitting in that frustration.

I’m angry.

I’m mad.

And honestly, I’m exhausted.

Because after finally getting my MRI results back, I now have confirmation of what I knew all along:

👉 I am not crazy.

When You Know Your Body, You Know

From the very beginning, I knew this wasn’t just arthritis.

This wasn’t normal pain.

This wasn’t something I could just “push through.”

My knee was:

  • Extremely swollen
  • Painful to the point where I could barely put pressure on it
  • Not improving with rest

I felt it deep in my body—something wasn’t right.

So I did what you’re supposed to do.

I went to a specialist.

I asked questions.

I advocated for myself.

I even asked for an MRI.

And I was told:

👉 “Let’s try meloxicam for 30 days. If it helps, it’s arthritis. If not, we’ll look at imaging.”

30 days… when I could barely walk.

The Pain of Not Being Heard

I left that appointment feeling dismissed.

Like my pain wasn’t urgent.

Like my voice didn’t matter.

Like I was supposed to just wait it out.

But let’s be real…

👉 How do you do physical therapy when it hurts just to stand?

How do you “push through” when your body is clearly saying STOP?

I tried. I really did.

But it wasn’t getting better.

Trusting Myself Changed Everything

Eventually, I reached a point where I knew:

👉 If I don’t advocate for myself, no one else will.

With the support of my physical therapist—and my own instincts—I went somewhere else for a second opinion.

And that decision changed everything.

Finally Getting Answers

After almost a month of pain, frustration, and feeling unheard…

I got the MRI.

And what did it show?

👉 A meniscus tear in my knee.

Exactly what I had been feeling all along.

This Shouldn’t Have Taken This Long

And that’s the part that hurts the most.

If someone had listened…

If someone had taken me seriously…

If someone had trusted that I know my own body…

👉 I might not be here right now.

I might not have spent weeks in unnecessary pain.

I might have already been on the path to healing.

Why Self-Advocacy in Healthcare Matters

So many women—especially plus-size women—are dismissed when it comes to pain.

We’re told:

  • “It’s just weight.”
  • “It’s probably arthritis.”
  • “Give it time.”

But here’s the truth:

👉 Delayed care can make things worse.

👉 Being unheard can delay diagnosis.

👉 And your voice matters in your own healthcare.

How to Advocate for Yourself at the Doctor

If you’re feeling unheard, here are a few things I’ve learned:

✔ Trust your body

If something feels off, don’t ignore it.

✔ Ask for the test

You have the right to ask for imaging, labs, or referrals.

✔ Get a second opinion

Another doctor can see what someone else missed.

✔ Speak up—even when it’s uncomfortable

You are not being difficult. You are being proactive.

✔ Don’t settle for being dismissed

Your health is too important.

Where I Am Now

I’m still frustrated.

I’m still angry.

But I’m also…

👉 Relieved.

Because now I have answers.

Now I can move forward.

Now I can finally begin healing.

To Anyone Who Needs to Hear This

If you feel like your doctor isn’t listening…

If you feel like your pain is being brushed off…

If you feel like something is wrong…

👉 Don’t stop advocating for yourself.

Find another doctor.

Ask more questions.

Push for answers.

Because you deserve to be heard.
