For as long as I can remember, my self-worth was tangled up with numbers on a scale. From the time I was 12, I thought those digits defined my beauty, my health, and even my happiness. My journey started with dieting young—trying every trendy diet or restrictive meal plan I could find. From sticking to 1,000 calories a day to suffering through the cabbage soup diet, I convinced myself that each attempt would bring me closer to “better.”

I took every supplement advertised as a quick fix, hoping it would be the magic solution to weight loss. I spent years in a cycle of gains and losses, going from people telling me I was “too skinny” and asking if I was sick, to comments about needing to “take better care of myself” when I gained weight. The truth was, no matter what my weight was, I still felt incomplete. Each time I reached a goal, there was no relief, no lasting change in how I saw myself.

Finally, I realized: no number was going to change my feelings. So I made a choice—I threw away my scale.

Getting rid of the scale was my way of choosing myself, free from outside expectations and criticism. Now, I move my body for joy, not punishment. I make choices that are good for my body because they make me feel good—not because I’m chasing a number. I’ve stopped pressuring myself with drastic changes and, instead, focused on small, sustainable steps. Sure, I still have moments where I backtrack or feel frustrated, but overall, I’ve made a shift that feels real and lasting.

I am not my weight. I am not my size. Getting rid of the scale has been the best decision I’ve ever made for my mental and physical health.

Now, even at doctor’s appointments, I opt out of weighing myself. It’s enough that so often, my weight is the first thing they attribute any health issue to. Whether I have a headache, experience pain from fibromyalgia, or flare-ups from rheumatoid arthritis, I’m often met with assumptions tied to my weight. I won’t give them another number to fuel that bias.

Throwing away my scale was an act of self-love, a declaration that my worth isn’t up for debate. I am more than the weight of my body, and my health is more than a number. Moving forward, I choose to live in a way that honors who I am, not what others think I should be.
